Vanilla pods are long and thin orchid pods. Inside you find a thousand small seeds that give rich vanilla aroma.
To get the seeds out, the vanilla pod is sometimes first heated in a warm liquid to make it easier to open, but even a dry pod is easily cut along with a sharp knife. Seeds are scraped out of the open pod. The pod can be thrown away or used to make vanilla sugar.
